Yes it truly matters. I can tell from my own experience. If domain boundaries are freely interpretable or come without obligations, you will end up with tons of point-to-point interfaces, application backdoors, and so on. Building a proper data abstraction, aka data product, takes time. Not all teams show interest for this, so you need to provide clarity about what the rules of the game are.
